Shanna
Bierman, continued...
In May 2008, I collaborated with a local water
resource company to design and implement a rainwater
harvesting system for a 14-stall boarding stable. In
Phase I, we have installed a 725 gallon cistern to
collect rain water off of the roof of the barn. This
water will be used to bathe the horses and for
cleaning of equipment. Phase II of this project is
to deepen the existing pond and feed the downspouts
from the roof of the barn into it. The water
collected will be used to fill water troughs and to
water an indoor riding arena. Our goal is to limit
the use of the existing well to fill water buckets
inside the stalls.
I
am an active volunteer with the Durham Farmer’s
Market and help to keep our patrons educated on the
benefits of eating locally. During my years as a
volunteer, I have had the pleasure of meeting and
getting to know the local farmers and artisans.
Learning from them and sharing experiences and
lessons learned has proved a valuable resource in my
efforts to help others become sustainable.
Currently I am assisting Extraordinary Ventures, a
non-profit
that
supports our local community by providing job and
social opportunities for people with developmental
disabilities, implement a recycling and compost
program. We are working to teach the people in their
program how to compost and how to cut their use of
disposable products. My goal is to help them learn
how to incorporate these habits into their home
lives as well.
Through my training with Jane Norton in her
ReSourcing
Training Program, I am able to assist businesses and
individuals develop realistic plans for becoming
sustainable and lessening their impact on the
environment.
